Why Hair Salons Ask for a Skin Test Before Colour

A skin test before hair colour can feel like an extra step when you are ready to book, but professional colour products can cause allergic reactions. The test is there for a reason.

It can feel like an annoying extra step, but professional hair colour involves products that can cause allergic reactions. The test is there for a reason.

What is a hair colour skin test?

A small amount of the relevant product is applied in the way instructed by the manufacturer or salon procedure so any potential reaction can be monitored before a much larger amount is used during the colour service.

Why can you not just sign a disclaimer?

Because safety is not improved by a signature. A responsible salon follows the relevant product guidance and its professional procedures rather than treating a waiver as a shortcut.

What if you have coloured your hair for years?

Previous use does not automatically mean you can never react. Salon requirements can also depend on how long it has been since your last colour, whether products have changed and whether there have been changes in your circumstances.

The correct answer is to check with the salon rather than assume.

Plan ahead for weddings, holidays and events

If you want colour before an important date, do not leave the first contact until the last minute. Allow time for the skin test, consultation if needed and the actual colour appointment.

What if you are booking balayage or foils?

Whether a skin test is required depends on the products and services involved. At Qhair @ Quakersmill, relevant colour bookings are clearly marked as requiring a skin test. If you are unsure, ask before your appointment.

What if you have had a reaction before?

Tell the salon before any service is carried out. Do not use a blog post or an online checklist to decide that a previous reaction “probably does not count”.

We offer skin-test appointments at Qhair @ Quakersmill in Bexhill. The easiest route is to arrange it before your colour date so there is no last-minute problem.
