A hair toner is one of the least understood parts of professional colouring. It is often treated as an optional extra, when in many lightening services it is part of creating the finished shade.

Lightening and toning do different jobs

Lightener removes or lifts pigment. Toner then helps refine the colour that is left behind. That might mean cooling excessive warmth, creating a beige or creamy finish, softening the result or bringing different sections together.

Can toner make hair lighter?

Toner is not a replacement for proper lightening. If your hair is too dark to reach the target shade, toner alone cannot magically turn it into a much lighter blonde.
